U.S. Immigration, Federal Criminal Defense & International Child Abduction Trial Lawyer

Thompson Law Advocates, P.C. is a skillful trial legal team that provides personal attention to important legal matters. Founded in 2013 as the Law Offices of Peter J. Thompson, Esq., we value the individual person and their story and experience, and work tirelessly to advocate for clients facing legal matters. We serve clients in three important ways – in U.S. immigration matters, representation in federal criminal court cases, and in civil court cases, including those involving Hague Convention for the Civil Aspects of Childhood Abduction claims. Starting from the premise that every case, and every client, is different, our legal team carefully develops the legal representation that each client needs and does so with uncompromising skill.

Our law practice’s mission is to provide skillful representation to clients in these areas (U.S. Immigration, criminal courts, federal courts). We also provide professional support to criminal defense attorneys who must advise their non-citizen clients of the immigration consequences of pending criminal charges. As we continue pressing our mission today, we have developed and expanded our legal services to include a full immigration law practice (including Petitions for Alien Relative (USCIS Form I-130), applications for adjustments of status to lawful permanent residency (“green card”) (USCIS Form I-485), applications for work authorization (Form I-765), permission to travel (USCIS Form I-131), and other forms of legal status including U-Visas, S-Visas, F-Visas, and B-1/B-2 tourist visas, as well as important work with applications for Asylum (USCIS Form I-589) and Protections Under the Convention Against Torture (CAT protections). We understand the complicated and ever-changing realities of Immigration Law and continue to monitor and respond to these changes. Thousands of clients have successfully navigated the U.S. Immigration system with our assistance.

Thanks to our legal expertise and extensive experience in counseling the non-citizen client, including serving as the former Director of Defender’s Immigration Project (Philadelphia), our law office continues to be an important resource for criminal defense attorneys throughout the United States who need critical information and advice regarding the immigration consequences for their non-citizen clients (“crimmigration”) [Padilla v. Kentucky]. Recognized as an expert in immigration consequences for the non-citizen client in both State and Federal Courts, our team has counseled private clients as well as the clients of criminal defense attorneys on the immigration consequences they may face in Immigration court after their case in criminal court is resolved. Entering a plea or sentencing in criminal court for the non-citizen clients is a stressful and dangerous event. Having a recognized expert in immigration consequences in your corner from the time of arrest to any plea or sentence is imperative for best outcomes. We work hard to research and provide real-time information to our non-citizen clients, and oftentimes this information makes a lifetime of difference. We are here to help with decision making in this complicated area of the law and are proud to provide this “crimmigration” (immigration consequences) legal service.

Representing vulnerable people in court continues to be the driving passion of this law firm. We represent parents and their children in federal courts who face accusations of child abduction under the Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction (1980) and the International Child Abduction Remedies Act (ICARA), codified at 42 U.S.C. § 11601, et seq. Our extensive experience in both federal trials and U.S. immigration place us in a unique position to fight for our client’s rights. We are not afraid to fight strongly in court for those most vulnerable – people who come to the United States and seek protection. If you or your loved ones have escaped domestic violence and abuse and find yourselves in the United States facing these serious Hague Convention allegations, we are here to help. We understand the stress involved in making the courageous decision to flee domestic violence and seek and request protection. It is even more challenging facing allegations that you unlawfully removed your child/children from your home country and having courts and judges demand that you return the child/children to the other parent. Being in Federal District Court and facing allegations is demanding and stressful and understanding and applying the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure and the Federal Rules of Appellate Procedure even more so. We have been in the fight – we represent people in contested Hague Convention hearings, we file and argue appeals in the federal appellate system (Circuit Courts), and we don’t stop finding real and creative ways to protect parents and their children. People with the courage to escape domestic violence deserve a legal team passionate about defending parents who place their children’s needs first. We are here to help access this justice and are proud to serve as your voice.
